Common Firearms Terms to Know
- FFL (Federal Firearms License)
A license that allows businesses like Basalt Firearms to legally sell, transfer, and ship firearms. We hold a current FFL and can assist with transfers and purchases both in-store and from online sellers. - Caliber
The internal diameter of a gun’s barrel or the diameter of the bullet it fires. Popular calibers include 9mm, .45 ACP, and .22 LR. Caliber plays a major role in recoil, cost, and application (self-defense, target shooting, hunting, etc.). - Magazine
A device that holds ammunition and feeds it into the firearm. Not to be confused with a “clip” (often misused), magazines are detachable or fixed and come in various capacities. - Clip
Often confused with a magazine, a clip is a device that holds ammunition together and helps load it into a magazine or internal magazine, but it doesn’t feed the rounds directly into the chamber. Clips are more common in older firearms and military surplus rifles, like the M1 Garand. It’s a small distinction, but an important one. If you’re unsure which your firearm uses, we’re happy to help clarify at Basalt Firearms.
- Semi-Automatic
A type of firearm that automatically reloads after each shot but requires a trigger pull for each round. Many popular handguns and rifles fall into this category. - Safety
A mechanism that helps prevent accidental discharge. Every firearm handles safety differently, so it’s crucial to understand how yours works—and to practice the Four Rules of Gun Safety. - Slide
The upper part of a semi-automatic pistol that moves backward when a shot is fired. It ejects the spent casing and chambers a new round. - Action
The mechanism that loads, fires, and ejects a cartridge. Common types include bolt-action, lever-action, and semi-automatic. - Concealed Carry
Carrying a firearm in a hidden manner (under clothing, in a bag, etc.). In Colorado, this requires a valid Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP), which Basalt Firearms can guide you through. - Background Check
A legal requirement for most firearm purchases. We conduct this process in-store during each sale to ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations. - Barrel Length
Measured from the back of the chamber to the end of the muzzle. Barrel length affects accuracy, recoil, and legality in some firearm categories.
