Taking your first firearms training class is a big step, and it’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. Whether you’re pursuing self-defense, recreational shooting, or simply want to feel more confident around firearms, training is the key to becoming a safe and responsible gun owner.
At Basalt Firearms, we pride ourselves on creating a supportive, beginner-friendly environment where safety comes first and learning is hands-on. Here’s exactly what you can expect from your first class with us.
Before You Arrive: What to Bring
To make the most of your training experience, we recommend coming prepared with the following:
- A government-issued ID
- Eye and ear protection (if you don’t have these, we can provide them)
- Closed-toe shoes and comfortable range-appropriate clothing
- A notebook and pen if you’d like to take notes during the classroom portion
If you don’t own a firearm yet,no problem! We have rentals available, and our instructors are happy to help you find one that suits your needs during the class.
The Classroom Portion: Learning the Basics
Your class will typically begin in a classroom setting. This portion lays the foundation for safe and responsible firearm use, covering:
- The four basic rules of firearm safety
- How firearms function (mechanics, parts, and terminology)
- Range etiquette, including how to safely carry, load, and handle firearms on the firing line
Our instructors break everything down in a way that’s easy to understand, and we encourage questions every step of the way.
Range Time: Hands-On Practice With Guidance
After the classroom session, you’ll move to the range for live-fire exercises. You’ll practice:
- Safe loading and unloading procedures
- Correct stance, grip, and trigger control
- Target shooting with close instructor supervision
You’ll have plenty of time to get comfortable on the range, and our instructors are right there with you, helping you improve your form and answering questions as you go.
Supportive, Skilled Instructors
We know how important your first experience is. That’s why our certified instructors are trained not just in firearms, but in how to teach beginners with patience and professionalism. Our class sizes are kept small to ensure personalized attention, and our team works hard to make sure everyone feels comfortable, confident, and safe.
